This project takes the form of an addition that transforms two traditional triple-decker homes into an artist's residency. We began to look at anomalies produced by additions to the existing Somerville Triple-decker type. Blue represents the ordinary, and yellow represents the exceptions. Our interest in these additions lies in their fragmentary nature and small scale. Intersecting planes that envelop our fragmentary additions are constructed from regulating lines on the site. The volumes take the form of stacked programmatic additions within these envelopes. This leaves negative space wedges that produce additional thresholds between inside and outside, and diffuse light into the building.
